Australia warns citizens vs RP poll-related violence

Citing the volatile political situation in the run-up to the May 14 elections, the Australian government has warned its citizens to stay away from politically related violence. In a travel advisory updated Friday night, the Australian Embassy advised its nationals to avoid demonstrations, protests and rallies that it said "may turn violent." "Mid-term elections will be held on 14 May 2007. Elections in the Philippines have in the past been associated with politically motivated violence. You should avoid any demonstrations, protests, rallies or other public events as they may turn violent," it said in the advisory on its website (www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Philippines). On the other hand, the advisory also reiterated its warning against terrorist attacks, which may take place in areas frequented by foreigners such as shopping malls, embassies, expatriate housing complexes, hostels, guest houses, clubs, hotels, restaurants, bars, movie theatres, schools, places of worship, tourist areas, markets and outdoor recreation and major sporting events. Infrastructure associated with the Philippines government such as public transport, airports, sea ports, oil depots and public buildings are also potential terrorist targets, it said. "You should not travel on ferries unless no other means of travel is available. Terrorists claimed responsibility for a fire on a ferry traveling between Manila and the central Philippines in February 2004. Further attacks could occur," it said. The advisory likewise reiterated its advice against travel to Mindanao, including mainland Mindanao, the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Sulu Archipelago. "We strongly advise you not to travel to mainland Mindanao, the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Sulu Archipelago regions of Mindanao, including Basilan, Jolo and Tawi-Tawi due to the very high threat of terrorist attack, including kidnapping, and related counter-terrorism operations. If you are in these areas you should consider leaving," it said. "Recent credible information indicates terrorists may be in the advanced stages of attack planning. The attacks may be imminent and could occur at any time, anywhere in Mindanao," it added. The Australian embassy likewise cautioned its citizens against venturing near Bulusan, Mayon Taal volcanoes, which recently showed signs of activity. - GMANews.TV
